P&D, Shade is Cool, Madison Ave. Improvements, and Art Crosswalks
Much of the work of MidtownMemphis.org happens at our monthly Planning and Development meetings where we discuss applications to the Landmarks Commission, Land Use Control Board, and Board of Adjustment with neighborhood representatives.
Our initiatives take us out into midtown neighborhoods to turn our mission into action. Our Shade is Cool campaign is where we plant native shade trees to help create a sustainable midtown. The Madison Ave. Improvement Project targets the section of Madison between Avalon and Angelus as an area that has not shared in the success of Overton Square to the East and the Medical District to the West. After meeting with the areas business leaders and holding PARK(ing) Day events in 2022 and 2023 to get input from area residents we embarked on a phased approach to improve the area. Phase one, we planted on Avalon South of Madison, Phase 2, we planted on Angelus North of Madison.
In Phase 3, our Art Crosswalks project at Madison and Avalon with the Urban Art Commission will help make Madison Avenue safer and more beautiful. The crosswalks are scheduled to be installed in October 2025.
